Oil Paintings by Denis Chiasson, Plus: Enter to Win!

Like other artists who were trained in graphic design, Denis Chiasson attaches great importance to composition. He begins his works by making a series of sketches or drawings. Once a sketch is chosen, Chiasson transposes the outline to the canvas which is progressively defined with the application of colour. What emerges is a painting whose subject is enhanced by strong, angular, intense lines. This meticulous process adds to his works a touch of perfectionism that is seldom seen elsewhere. His strong colours reveal an uncommon sensitivity, bringing forth touching images inhabited by a unique personal style.

Even in the midst of activity—playing music, painting, reading, skating, Chiasson’s subjects are in deep contemplation. In the world of increasingly hectic lives, Chiasson’s artwork contains within it an attempt to rest. His subjects juxtaposed against lively brushstrokes, reflect the viewers’ inner selves juxtaposed against the pressures of modern life.

But what is interesting and perhaps difficult about Chiasson’s work is the relationship between the viewer and subject. When one looks at a Chiasson, one looks into a private moment. We look but are not looked at. Viewers are voyeurs, their gazes active. Chiasson’s figures have a downward gaze and perpetually closed eyes. Perhaps the viewer is the intruder, comforter, or witness; perhaps the viewer is reflected back onto themselves, confronted with their own quietness.

Since then, Anita has taken many painting and drawing courses.  She prefers acrylics, and loves to use bright colors to enhance her whimsical style of painting. Her favorite subjects include the Okanagan landscape, which she captures using her own unique interpretation of the natural environment. Inspiration: The Alberta Landscape

We hope everyone in Calgary has been enjoying this glorious weather! Here are just a few of our favourite landscape pieces to inspire you this week.

 Fraser Hine
Fraser Hine grew up in small towns in Saskatchewan and now resides in Calgary, Alberta. Hine draws inspiration for his artistic works from everyday scenery and nature; back alleys, street scenes, and stunning rural landscapes depicting the mountains of the west are all subjects which the artist captures with a unique sense of familiarity and emotion.

Although Hine’s works represent the artist's own interpretation of a time and place -- a snapshot of a fleeting moment -- his paintings remain open to the viewer to discover his or her own interpretation.

Inside Look: Shirley Elias featured on Shaw TV Winnipeg

Shirley Elias, represented by Webster Galleries in Calgary, Alberta, was recently featured on Shaw TV Winnipeg presenting her daring new piece that sees music and art come together in the Muse/ically Mussorgsky Project! Check out the video link to the left to get an inside look at her vibrant paintings.

About Shirley:"My art is about communicating with color and composition. As a concert pianist my performances were about connecting with an audience from stage, using colors of sound within a structured musical framework. My work as a painter is based on a similar principle, as I aspire to communicate with colors on canvas; vibrant colors presented in a detailed and balanced composition. I am directed by the flow and rhythm of the colors and design. Just as one's ear is constantly stimulated in a concert setting, I now strive to keep the viewer's eyes engaged and moving across the painting."

New in the Gallery: Landscape Paintings by Dan Varnals

Spring Colours - Dan Varnals
Oil on canvas, 24" x 36"

"I would describe myself as a realist; my inspiration coming from my environment. Perhaps it is the patterns of light and shadow, or the way colours are affected by sunlight and reflections that catches my eye. The challenge of capturing these qualities is what fascinates me. The subject matter can range from the mundane to the magnificent, but the goal remains to capture and reveal these essential qualities."

New Paintings by Sheila Adams, Ken Kirkby, and Alice Saltiel-Marshall

http://www.webstergalleries.com/title.php?page=1&data=search_array&ititlenum=19353
In 1956, Scottish-born Sheila Adams came to Canada and made Calgary her home. The rugged beauty of Western Canada with its Rocky Mountains, Foothills and Alberta plains provide ideal subject matter for her work in oil and acrylic. Adams’ techniques and years of experience create fluid compositions that burst with the colour and energy of Alberta’s nature.

Always open to new concepts, Adams has explored various aspects of painting; experimenting with colour and design. Influenced by artists such as Norman Brown and Jean Geddes, Sheila is constantly increasing her body of knowledge and technical expertise. She is passionate about continuous growth as an artist and aims to breathes life into each of her new works. Adams is also a member of the Calgary Sketch Club and The Federation of Canadian Artists. In March 1996 she was awarded signature status with the Federation.
